Nissan’s IDS Concept Has Two Interiors and Wants You to Feel at Home Inside

Nissan chose the Tokyo Motor Show 2015 to unveil its latest concept, the IDS, a car that is supposed to drive itself with zero emissions. There are a couple of interesting things on the table here, but the one we found most intriguing was that the Japanese claim their hatch has two interiors.

Yes, you read that right and we were just as blown away as you are, but as it turns out, it’s actually a modular interior that slightly changes its looks depending on the driving mode you’re in. You see, the Nissan IDS Concept is a car built with one purpose in mind: a casualty and emission-free future.

The car is autonomous and electric, as you might’ve imagined. It uses a plethora of sensors to drive itself when in Piloted Mode, which is also when the interior turns into a living room.

According to Nissan, the steering wheel hides inside the center of the instrument panel and a large flat screen comes out. Everything related to driving is handled by the AI as well as voice and gestures from the driver. A soft light creates a cosy ambience while the four seats are rotated inwards to facilitate conversations between the occupants of the car.

What’s even more interesting is that Nissan claims their autonomous car is not like any other out there, because it will not just take you from point A to point B but it will do so while mimicking the driver’s style. Of course, that’s optional but it does sound interesting, to say the least.

When you actually want to take over the controls, the steering wheel comes right back out of the instrument cluster and all seats face forward. All the necessary controls are also included and shown in front of the driver while the interior lighting switches to blue, a color that apparently stimulates concentration.

Even in this mode, the car’s sensors remain active and they will help you avoid any accidents by even taking over in certain situations when their readouts show imminent danger.

The exterior of the car is quite tricky as well, as it shows people nearby that it is aware of their presence. For example, the car’s silver side body line is an LED stripe called the Intention Indicator. When pedestrians or cyclists are nearby, the strip shines red, signaling that the car is aware of them.

Another electronic display, which faces outside from the instrument panel, can flash messages such as “After you” to pedestrians.

No word about what is actually powering this car has been offered, but the Japanese manufacturer has confirmed that the car is electric. We do know that there’s a 60 kWh battery included in the package, and thanks to the low drag coefficient and lightweight construction, the range should be impressive.
