The world knows the 1.6-liter turbo engine developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance from the mental Clio RS hot hatch. But the same unit can be found under the bonnet of many other cars, where it tries to act more mature and frugal. Today, Nissan announced its X-Trail models sold in Europe will be available with a 163 PS version of that mill.
In Britain, the 1.6-liter petrol turbocharged engine cuts the X-Trail's entry price to £21,995 OTR, which is £1,460 lower than the dCi 130. So even though you get a lot more power than the diesel model, the price is lower.

The downside is that fuel economy isn't as great as with the 1.6 dCi, but that's to be expected. We're told to expect 45.6mpg (6.2 l/100km) under ideal circumstances, which is equivalent to 145 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Even though it's a lot lighter than the previous model, the X-Trail is a big crossover, so more power is probably a good idea. The 1.6-liter turbo engine delivers its peak power at 5,600 rpm and couples that to 240 Nm of torque (177 lb-ft) between 2,000 and 4,000rpm. It is offered in two-wheel drive form only, and a six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard. As far as performance is concerned, 0 to 62 mph takes 9.7 seconds, and the top speed is exactly 124 mph (200 km/h).

It might be worth knowing that the X-Trail DIG-T 163 only packs those seven magical seats once you hand over £24,595 for an Acenta model. We think that from a performance side of things, the £23,525 Volkswagen Tiguan with a 150 PS 2.0 TDI is a far better idea. You can have it with all-wheel drive or an automatic gearbox, which is what you want when you pay this kind of money for an "SUV".
