As the 21st United Nations Conference on Climate Change is still underway in Paris, Nissan and Enel signed an important agreement for a new system called Vehicle 2 Grid, which will allow consumers to store, use or return electricity in excess to the grid.
It’s not something out of the ordinary to hear that the Japanese carmaker is part of this, given that, as you know, the Nissan Leaf is the world’s best-selling electric car. What is very interesting is how they plan to turn drivers and energy users into “energy hubs.”
What those drivers are going to do with the energy stored is up to them. They can either release their Leaf's energy back into the grid for some extra cash or even power their homes (up to a point).
The viability tests are already underway and will show for the first time how electric vehicles can contribute to the development of an energy market.
According to Paul Willcox, Nissan Europe Chairman, this new project will take the car beyond its road vehicle limits to be used for charging your home or even your office. He also states that this is the first step towards an integrated automotive energy eco-system.
The Grid Integrated Vehicles will be first brought to countries where regulations allow sufficient value generations. The first to host the trials will be Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands and, later on, other North European regions.
Ernesto Ciorra, Chief Innovation Officer at Enel, believes the integration with electric vehicles is a cornerstone for the future of the electric system and this new partnership with Nissan will bring new services to the customers, while also allowing them to use their electric cars to release green energy back into the grid.
A very important feature will allow Nissan Leaf owners to charge their vehicles during low-demand, cheap tariff periods, and then use all the energy saved into the car’s batteries when costs are higher.
