Nissan’s all new Sentra, a ‘baby-Altima’, if you will, has been completely redesigned from the ground up, for the 2013 model-year. While the old Sentra models had only been manufactured in places like Mexico (where production will continue, along with the new US plant), The Philippines and even Malaysia, the new car will be manufactured in one of Nissan’s US plants, in Canton, Mississippi.
Also, as of November, it will share the production line with Nissan’s Frontier pick-up truck and the Xterra SUV, the production of which will be moved from Smyrna, Tennessee. The addition of these three new models to the production schedule of the Canton plant means that Nissan will be looking to hire an additional 1,000 workers to cope with the extra workload, as the new Sentra enters production in the third quarter of 2013.
With the influx of new workers, the plant’s entire staff will reach the 4,500 mark, being a vital source of income for the local economy. According to Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant, "Nissan has been a valued member of our state and local business communities and a leading employer in Mississippi for nearly a decade [. . .] Nissan's trust in Mississippi's workforce is evident, and I am proud that this company is creating 1,000 additional jobs for hard-working Mississippians. This expansion is proof that 'Mississippi Works' and is a superb place for business."
