Nissan to Introduce New Dual Injector System

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced today it will introduce a new fuel delivery system for small-displacement engines on the market  starting with early fiscal 2010 . The system developed by Nissan, called Dual Injector System, uses an injector for each port rather than one per cylinder. This results in speeding up the process of fuel vaporization thus reducing the amount of unburned fuel and hydrocarbon emissions.

With most petrol engines using one injector per cylinder, supplying fuel to two intake ports, the Dual Injector System from Nissan doubles the number of injectors per cylinder. “This reduces the diameter of fuel droplets by about 60%, resulting in smoother and more stable combustion” stated the press release.

Another important feature of this new fuel system is the presence of continuous valve timing control on the exhaust side rather than the conventional intake-side control. This in turn improves heat efficiency, reduces pumping losses and raises fuel efficiency by almost 4%.

This new fuel system also uses half the amount of rare metals in the catalyzer while maintaining the efficiency of the catalytic conversion system. And the amount of rare metals could potentially be reduced to 75% in combination with the ultra-low rare metal catalysts introduced in 2008.

We consider it important to further improve the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines as demand for gasoline and other internal-combustion systems continues to increase around the world,” said Shuichi Nishimura, Corporate Vice President, Nissan Powertrain Engineering Division. “By widely applying the Dual Injector system on small-displacement engines, we hope to help reduce CO2 emissions and conserve rare metals.”
