Nissan Teases New Crossover Concept Ahead of Frankfurt, Could Be the New Juke

It's business as usual in the automotive world with only a few days remaining ahead of the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show debut: manufacturers are getting ready for the big event and they're throwing teaser after teaser to keep us busy.

The latest came from Nissan and it's said to preview a crossover. Since both the Qashqai and the X-Trail (or Rogue, as it's known in the US) have recently moved up to a new generation, this leaves us with just four possibilities.

#1 The concept is just a concept and nothing more

This option can never be ruled out, but even so we can still look for styling cues that will make their way into future Nissan models once the concept will be revealed in Frankfurt. Its importance would be somewhat diminished, but not completely annihilated.

#2 The concept is previewing a completely new model

Yeah, but what model could that be? Nissan already has pretty much all sorts of crossovers there are, so there isn't any room left in the range. Sure, they can always carve a new niche just like they've done before, but this time it would seem a bit stretched. But who knows, maybe they'll pull it off - if anyone can do it, it's them.

#3 The concept previews the new Juke

The tiny crossover has gone through all the usual phases of a model's life and is currently closing its dying moments. It was launched in 2010 so it could still have a little time left, depending on how much of a hurry Nissan is in. Judging by the model's success, they could extend the current generation for at least one more year, so this concept will most probably be a rather bold and futuristic interpretation of the new model, if this will be the case.

#4 The concept previews the new Z model

Oh, yes, in case you've forgotten, word on the street (those streets frequented by Nissan employees) is the new Z car - you know, the 370Z coupe - is going to be a crossover. We don't really get how this can be either, but apparently it's more than just a rumor. Nissan has probably realized that while coupes bring you fame, they don't do very well in the financial department. Crossovers, on the other hand, do just that, so imagine a sportier one such car with a name that contains the letter "Z". Nissan has done it before in the shape of the Juke R Nismo, so it's not at all unthinkable. A bit undesirable, yes, but not unthinkable.

Regardless of which of the three will prove to be the right assumption (or maybe there's a fifth we didn't think of), from what we can see in the image provided we're looking at a very angular car. If this does turn out to be the new Juke, it would be a very drastic departure from the first generation's overall roundness. It would be a risky bet for Nissan, given how successful they were with the first model.

But it's too early to draw conclusions, so we'll have to wait for Nissan to make their official move in Frankfurt.
