Nissan have just announced that they will be using a fly-by-wire steering system in their Infinit-branded cars, in an effort to completely eliminate steering feel. They are calling it ‘steer-by-wire’, and the tech will make its official debut on an actual car within the year.
The Japanese automaker says that the system completely eliminates any of the vibration caused by the wheel rotation, thus ensuring a very smooth steering experience. The driver turns the wheel, and a signal is sent to actuators, which in move the wheels. Nissan claims that the system also communicates some of the road feedback back to the driver, but we’re quite skeptical regarding this fact, as even regular electric steering systems are virtually devoid of feel.
Nissan will be the first mainstream manufacturer to use such a system, and for some people it will undoubtedly be a selling point, and a pub conversation starter, for others it will detract from the overall experience of driving, if it doesn’t perform as well as they say it will.
