The 18,000 extra cars Nissan sold in the first half of the year might only represent a 5 percent increase over 2011, but with the overall European market crumbling under the force of the crisis, what Nissan achieved is a sort of miracle.
The overall market has been down about 4.5 percent from last year, and the French and Italian automakers are suffering badly.
Nissan’s results come thanks to the continued popularity of the crossover range. The UK-built Qashqai and Juke together sold 40,000 in June alone, representing a 23% increase.
“The difficulties facing the European car market in 2012 are well-documented. Therefore achieving a 5% increase in sales volume at the halfway stage gives us confidence that we are offering the right products that appeal to, and meet the needs of, our European customers," said Nissan Vice President for Sales Operations in Europe, Guillaume Cartier.
