Nissan`s plan to produce the Leaf at their Smyrna plant, in Tennessee, is well underway, and cars should begin rolling off the production line soon. It was originally planned to enter production in late 2012, but here we are in 2013, and Nissan is still doing ‘trial runs’, and it has not officially commenced.
Still, this is not the end of the world, and it is more a case of just missing a deadline, and it will not require any major rethink of the operation. With the battery manufacturing plant virtually in-house, and most of the work being done on site, they should encounter no more hitches, and they will definitely not miss their new deadline, set for ‘early 2013’.
The US-built Leaf will allow Nissan to price their EV differently to the ones imported from Japan (it will be cheaper), and for the first time ever, a sans-extras ‘base model’ will be offered, which is the model we think will spur sales on more than any other.
Deliveries are poised to begin around the end of February, and Nissan will not want to miss this deadline, as the imported Leaf is drastically outsold by its one of its main competitors, the highly-talented Chevy Volt range-extender.
