Priced from $37,140 and supremely capable at towing and hauling stuff from Point A to Point B, the Nissan Titan XD Diesel is a tough cookie to crack. But as it happens, the Titan XD with the Cummins oil-chugging engine isn’t without its faults.
Nissan informed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration earlier in November than a voluntary recall campaign is in the offing, mentioning that 12,112 examples of the 2016 Nissan Titan XD Diesel are to be summoned for a fix. The 573 report points out that the temporary fuel tank breather tube cap may not have been removed during vehicle assembly.
What’s more, the tube may not have been correctly affixed to the bed rail. As a result of this mess-up, the fuel tank breather tube is prone to deform in rare instances. This may lead to improper ventilation, a condition that causes the fuel gauge and distance-to-empty meter to display remaining fuel incorrectly. Ultimately, the Titan XD will run out of diesel fuel, which is a bit of a problem.
Now here’s the funny part of this recall: the month was May 2016 when the manufacturer discovered during an internal investigation that “the issue was caused by an isolated technician error.” After the technician had been retrained to remove the breather tube cap, Nissan became aware of not one, not two, but five incidents attributable to this error. Of the 12,112 trucks potentially affected, the estimated percentage with defect is 2 percent.
Nissan will notify owners by January 2017, with the dealerships instructed to inspect the breather tube. Regardless of what the mechanic finds in there, all those 12,112 pickups will have the fuel tank breather tube, fuel sending unit, and/or the fuel tank replaced, as necessary. Free of charge, of course.
So there you have it. If you own a 2016 Nissan Titan XD with the torquey 5.0-liter Cummins turbo diesel, you might want to head to safecar.gov to find out if your truck is due a visit to the nearest Nissan dealer.
