Nissan of North America has announced a sweeping recall affecting a broad range of models which all suffer from the same problem related to the deployment of their airbags.
The problem is not a mechanical one, as the company's engineers have traced it back to a software glitch that is said to sometimes misjudge the presence of an adult occupant in the passenger seat.

When the system doesn't detect the passenger, it will therefor disengage the passenger airbag. In the event of a crash, the failure to deploy could come with potentially fatal consequences. Nissan says that no incidents have been reported, which means that it has potentially steered away from lawsuits costing billions in settlement money.

A total of 989,701 vehicles are affected by the recall in America alone, with another 60,000 reported in Canada. Here is a list of these cars:

  • 2013 and 2014 MY Nissan Altima
  • 2013 and 2014 MY Nissan Leaf
  • 2013 and 2014 MY Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2013 and 2014 MY Nissan Sentra
  • 2013 Nissan NV200 taxi
  • 2013 Infiniti JX35
  • 2014 Infiniti Q50
  • 2014 Infiniti QX60
If you're unsure if your Nissan or Infiniti is affected by the recall, contract information for the NGTSA can be found in the attached document below (recall number 14V138000 from March 25, 2014).
