Even if the regular Nissan GT-R has an appeal which cannot be contested, the Japanese took the car one step further this year with the introduction of the GT-R50 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July.
At first, this model tweaked with the help of Italdesign was presented only as a show car of sorts. Then, Nissan execs started talking about a possible production run for the mode. That possibility turned quicker than you can say GT-R50 into reality and come December the order books for the car are open.
Nissan said on Thursday that it is accepting orders for the model. Only 50 units will ever be built – at least that’s the word now – and each will sell for 990,000 EUR before taxes and options. That’s well above one million bucks at today’s exchange rates.
The GT-R50 started life as a NISMO version of the GT-R and as a means for Nissan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the model. It uses the exact same engine as the NISMO, namely a 3.8-liter VR38DETT tweaked into developing 120 ps more than the original 600 ps. Also, a revised suspension and Brembo six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes have been added.
Visually, the special version is no ordinary GT-R. The more aggressive look and feel have been achieved by lowering the roofline by 54 millimeters, and golden cues are sprinkled all over the body.
"The reaction from Nissan fans around the world – and potential customers of the GT-R50 – has greatly exceeded our expectations,” said in a statement Bob Laishley, global sports car program director at Nissan.
"These 50 cars, which celebrate 50 years of the GT-R as well as 50 years of Italdesign, will be rolling tributes to Nissan’s engineering leadership and rich sports car heritage for a long time to come.”
