Nissan has launched a new Micra this year, and it received the company’s CMF B platform to fight its competitors in the supermini segment.
The all-new Micra is now bigger than ever before, and it also comes with aggressive styling. The model is almost begging to get a performance variant, just like its “cousin” from the Renault range proudly has in the form of the RenaultSport Clio 200 RS.
In the case of Nissan, the Japanese brand has all the hardware it could need to build a Micra Nismo, and the desire is present if we were to judge looking at the 2013 Nissan March Nismo model.
The Nissan March is the Japanese version of the Micra, and it was available in its homeland as a Nismo model when the previous generation was in production, but it did not have a more powerful engine.
Instead, the previous Nismo version of the Japanese Micra received the exterior treatment suitable for such a version, without any performance enhancements. The interior got a new speedometer, a sports steering wheel, and red accents overall.
In a recent interview, a Renault official confirmed the Alliance’s interest in extending its brand synergies to a new level, which could include a performance version of the Micra. Mr. Bruno Ancelin specifically referred to the NISMO division of the Nissan brand, which could surely develop a Micra that could battle the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI.
The smallest Nismo model in the current Nissan range is the Juke, which comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. A unit with similar power and capabilities is fitted to the Renault Clio RS, which is the Nissan Micra Nismo’s French “cousin.”
Nissan might turn the Micra Nismo into reality with the current generation of the supermini, and the Japanese automaker has all it needs to do it. The only question that remains is when are they going to launch this variant on the market.
