They said it would never work, but it seems most of Nissan's critics have been silenced. After a somewhat shaky start the Japanese automaker seems to have found the sweet spot in the electric car market and is selling Leafs by the bucketload.
Results released by the automaker a few days ago show a new sales record has been achieved: 30,200. The result is made all the more impressive by the fact that December was one of their best months ever and that worldwide Leaf sales during the same year were around 60,000, also a record.
“Now in its fifth model year, Nissan LEAF is more popular than ever and continues to bring new buyers to Nissan,” stated Brendan Jones, director, Nissan Electric Vehicle Sales and Infrastructure. “From the beginning our vision was to bring electric vehicles to the mass market in a practical and fun-to-drive package, which is what makes Nissan LEAF the best-selling electric car in the world.”
The Tennessee-built electric car can be had for as little as $22,00 after the available maximum $7,500 federal tax credit. Its batter is EPA-rated at 84 miles of range and the model also achieves an MPGe rating of 126 city, 101 highway and 114 combined.
A recent study conducted in Britain, which is another country that assembles Leafs, shows most people never want to go back to a combustion engined car after experiencing the EV. Nissan's study has found that 89% of people have noticed considerable financial savings by switching to electricity and 93% of people use the Leaf as their main family car.
It's expected that Nissan will launch a brand new Leaf model within the next 2 years. Information trickling in from various sources suggests this will have around double the current battery range and will employ more conventional styling to attract regular buyers.
