Even though they have substantial oil reserves offshore, Norway is not buying Ferraris and Bentleys by the bundle like the folks in Dubai. Thanks to heavy subsidization from the very oil money that makes Norway rich, electric cars became more affordable and thus more popular there.
Recently released data shows the Nissan Leaf was the best sold car in Norway this October. With 716 customers, it secured 5.6 percent of the market, ahead of the new Toyota Auris, the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia.
Responsible for these numbers is an increase in demand from outside Norway's big cities. "We continue to be successful in the main Norwegian cities, but the majority of our growth is coming from rural areas, which shows the breadth of the Nissan LEAF's appeal," said Jean-Pierre Diernaz, Nissan Europe Director of Electric Vehicles.
The Nissan Leaf was not the best selling car in Norway in September. That title belongs to another electric car, the Tesla Model S. Two months ago, this more expensive EV grabbed 5.1 of the market, placing it ahead of the VW Golf with 4.6.
