Japan's obsession with masked fighters wearing spandex and funny helmets should, by now, be known to everybody thanks to the Power Rangers series. But there's also Ultraman, Metal Hero, Kamen Rider and a bunch of other series very few people outside the country know about. This makes explaining what you guys are looking at extremely complicated. Here goes…
A couple of days ago, Nissan announced it's partnering up with Tsuburaya Productions, a Japanese special effects studio. As part of a promotional tour, two electric vehicles were turned into these funky-looking machines that belong in a toy store for the upcoming television series "Ultraman Ginga S", which airs on July 15.
The logic behind the laser blasters and the crazy graphics is kind of hard to explain, even for us. But know this, Ultraman spends his days fighting monsters… in spandex.
Both the Leaf and the e-NV200 van will play a supporting role in the series and will be on display for fans to see during the Tokyo Toy Show 2014, to be held at famous Tokyo Big Sight on June 12 to 15.
According to the inter-webs, Ultraman is what's called a Japanese Tokusatsu, a television live-action series that uses lots of special effects. Apparently, both Godzilla and the Power Rangers fall into this category.
