Nissan has let slip that it will put the Kicks concept into mass production in 2016. Described as a compact SUV, it will compete with the Honda HR-V and Jeep Renegade, both of which are getting a lot of attention in Brazil.
Why are talking about Brazil? Because that's where the Kicks will be sold, at least initially. The concept was penned at a local design studio with inspiration coming from the colors and landscapes in Rio de Janeiro.
“It’s fun to drive, but at the same time, a serious vehicle. It is designed to have the appearance of a striking premium car that captivates the look and to be a vehicle whose owners would be proud to own and drive,” explains Shiro Nakamura, vice president of Nissan’s global design department.
Details are scarce about the production model, but the BR-spec Jeep Renegade and Honda HR-V are offered with ethanol compatibility based on a 1.8-liter engine. The Nissan Kicks will probably have the same type of engine, with prices starting at about 65,000 Brazilian real ($21,000).
Presented in 20014 at the Sao Paulo Auto Show in Brazil, the Kicks Concept is 4,300mm (169.3in) long, 1,800mm (70.8 inches) wide and 1,600mm (63 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,620mm (103.1 inches). That means it’s 175mm (6.9 inches) longer than the Juke.Yes, it's quite big, even though it looks kind of like the Renault Captur.
According to car.blog.br, the Nissan Kicks is expected to be the official car of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. That would give it a huge marketing boost, so maybe it will be offered in other emerging markets as well.
