A total of seven car crash test ratings have been revealed by Euro NCAP this week, with Nissan’s Juke crossover achieving the coveted 5-star overall rating, proving that it can provide adequate protection to both the adult and child occupants of the vehicle.

The crash tested vehicle obtained 31 points (87 percent) for adult occupant protection, 40 points (81 percent) for child occupants, 22 points (60 percent) for pedestrian and 5 points (71 percent) for the safety assist section.

The model tested was a Juke 1.6 in Acenta trim level, LHD. The safety systems that helped it achieve the highest star rating include Electronic Stability Control (ESC) - fitted as standard - and a seatbelt reminder for the driver and front seat passenger seating positions.

However, Euro NCAP says that a driver-set speed limitation device did not qualify for assessment as it is available only as an option.

Euro NCAP says the vehicle’s cabin remained stable but, on both the driver and passenger side, structures in the dashboard were considered to present a risk of injury to occupants of different sizes and to those sat in different positions.

“Accordingly, protection in this area was rated as marginal. Protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision was also rated as marginal," Euro NCAP said in the test results.

Parents will be glad to hear the Juke scored maximum points for its protection of the 3 year old dummy in the dynamic tests.

Pedestrians however might not be that lucky. “The bonnet provided good protection in most areas likely to be struck by a child's head, but was almost completely poor in those areas where an adult’s head would hit. The front edge of the bonnet also offered poor protection in almost every area tested,” Euro NCAP says.
