The Euro NCAP released a new series of crash test results on Wednesday, the most interesting of them regarding Nissan's electric vehicle, the Leaf. As we told you earlier today, the Euro NCAP awarded the Leaf a five-star rating, making the model the first EV in history to qualify for Europe's most stringent safety seal.
As was to be expected, the Japanese automaker reacted to the announcement make public by Euro NCAP, expressing its satisfaction that Europe, once again, proves it likes, endorses and embraces the EV (the Leaf is the holder of the European and World Car of the Year titles).
"Nissan Leaf's performance in these tough safety tests underlines the engineering integrity that has gone into the car and proves that this innovative 100 percent electric vehicle is the perfect match for daily family use. Not only does Nissan Leaf offer all the space, practicality and performance of any of its conventional rivals, it is one of the safest cars on the road," said Pierre Loing, vice president of product strategy and planning at Nissan.
According to the results released by the Euro NCAP, the Leaf achieved 89 percent in adult occupant protection, 83 percent in child occupant protection, 65 percent pedestrian protection and 84 percent safety assist. The model comes equipped, as standard, with airbags, Electronic Stability Control, seatbelt reminder system for the front seats and speed limitation device.
During the crash test, the battery was switched on to test the in-built safety measures of the electrical system, mostly of the automatic cut-off isolation in the event of an accident.
