A dark cloud has descended upon Nissan after the carmaker unexpectedly ousted its chairman and had him arrested on various charges. For about two weeks now when one hears the word Nissan what comes to mind are not cars, but scandal.
As the carmaker tries to redefine itself and find new leadership, there are some talking about tough times ahead for a company that last year fought alongside alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi against giants Volkswagen and Toyota.

All the hopes for the future of Nissan no longer reside in Ghosn now, but in its products, And that includes the Leaf and the new auto world order the little electric car ushered it a decade ago.

The Leaf and the upcoming electric cars from Nissan are essential for the mid-term plans, plans that go far beyond the automotive world. Ever since the Leaf was first introduced, Nissan has tried to find new and innovative uses for the car and its batteries.

This week, at the Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama, the carmaker opened the Energy Home, a demonstration house that takes its power from solar panels and an electric Leaf.

Using a vehicle-to-home system, the Energy Home charges the Leaf with energy from its solar panels. The Leaf than feeds back electricity into the house, acting as a storage medium for power when not rolling down the street.

According to Nissan, the Leaf battery is enough to power the home’s lighting, air conditioning, televisions and cooking appliances when the Sun is no longer up to feed the solar panels. Even with all these things draining energy from it, the Leaf battery should still have enough juice to get its owner to wherever he’s going.

As for the house itself, it was created by Nissan’s design head Alfonso Albaisa. It is made of wood, naturally, and was meant to resemble a traditional Japanese home.
