Nissan has announced today they will be investing $2 billion in order to establish a new manufacturing facility in Aguascalientes, Mexico, which should be ready by the end of next year. This should not only produce cars for the US markets, but is also ideally placed to shift cars to South American nations that have trade agreements.
The goal is to cut the dependence on imports to North America and to have 85% locally produced cars sold by 2015.
"Mexico is a key engine for Nissan’s growth in the Americas," said Carlos Ghosn, chairman and CEO of Nissan Motor. "Together with our new plant in Brazil, this new manufacturing facility in Aguascalientes is an important pillar in our strategy to ensure that Nissan has the capacity it needs to increase sales volume and market share across the Americas."
The new factory will create 3000 jobs directly and an estimated 9000 more through the parts suppliers.
