Body-on-frame SUVs might not be as popular as crossovers, but they’re tougher and far better off the beaten path. Some of them can even do luxury like their unibody peers, including the Nissan Armada for the U.S. market.
Manufactured in Japan at the Yukuhashi plant, the second generation of the Armada enters 2020 with a bigger price tag. The most affordable in the range is the SV trim level with rear-wheel drive, retailing at $47,100 excluding destination and freight. The SL, Platinum, and Platinum Reserve complete the list, as well as four-wheel drive for an additional $3,000 over two-wheel drive.

The problem with the 2020 Nissan Armada is that pricing has increased by up to $2,340 without any additional content if you ignore the heated outside mirrors that are now standard on all grades. Also new for this model year is the 22-inch wheel package, featuring 14-spoke forged aluminum-alloy wheels and 275/50 all-season tires.

As the flagship SUV of Nissan in North America, the Armada comes with a thumpin’ big engine from the get-go. Displacing 5.6 liters and proven in the Titan pickup truck, the Endurance V8 features best-in-class standard horsepower, a lot of torque, and best-in-segment towing capacity at 8,500 pounds (3,856 kilograms).

The rating applies to both two- and four-wheel-drive configurations, regardless of trim level. Intelligent Rear View Mirror or I-RVM is an optional extra, integrating an LCD monitor into the rearview mirror and a high-resolution camera mounted at the rear of the vehicle. Safety and driver-assist features are plentiful, including Intelligent Back-up Intervention, Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Lane Intervention, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and Intelligent Distance Control among many other.

No fewer than four option packages are offered for this model year, including the wheel-tire combo mentioned beforehand. The others come in the guise of the Premium Package, Driver Package, and Captain’s Chairs Package. Look forward to the 2020 Armada arriving at retailers before winter enters the scene.
