Nissan and BMW Join Forces for Installing Fast Chargers Across the US

Nissan and BMW are giving something back to their EV customers, as they will install fast chargers in 120 locations across 19 states in the USA. The chargers are specifically made for Nissan’s Leaf, BMW’s i3, or any other EV vehicle equipped with quick-charge ports.

Owners from or who travel along California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin will have the ability to easily extend the length of their electric travels.

Each of these new locations will offer dual 50 kW fast-charging stations with both CHAdeMO and SAE Combo connectors that will charge the cars up to 80 per cent in about 20-30 minutes, faster than the common Level 2 chargers with a power output of 240V.

Drivers can locate the chargers by using the ConnectedDrive in their i3s or the Nissan EZ-charge smartphone app in their Leafs.

According to Andrew Speaker, Nissan’s director of Electric Vehicle Sales and Marketing, the quick chargers will be installed at corporate workplaces and Nissan dealerships.

Cliff Fietzek, Manager Connected eMobility, BMW of North America, says that this project “builds on BMW’s ongoing commitment to participate in joint partnerships designed to expand DC fast charging options nationwide for al EV drivers.” He has also revealed that one of the main reasons for doing this is for more and more drivers to choose to experience the e-mobility.

Both BMW and Nissan have high-selling EV cars. The new 2016 Leaf is the first affordable electric vehicle to get more than 100 miles on a single charge. The vehicle gets 126 MPGe city and 101 MPGe highway on S models and 124 MPGe city and 101 MPG highway on SL and SV versions.

BMW’s first all-electric vehicle, the i3, has recently won the 2015 Green Car Of The Year award. The car has a range of 80-100 miles thanks to its 22 kWh lithium-ion battery and 170 horsepower synchronous electric engine. A combined rating of 124 MPGe, according to the U.S EPA, makes the i3 the most efficient EV.
