Starting at $24,100 for 2020, the Nissan Altima S is now available with the Driver Assist Package. This adds the Safety Shield 360 suite of safety and driving-assist features, which includes Pedestrian Detection along with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and High Beam Assist.
Safety Shield 360 comes standard on the SR, SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels. On the upside, even the entry-level S features Automatic Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, and Intelligent Driver Alertness. Step up to the range-topping Platinum trim level, and Nissan treats you to the Intelligent Around View Monitor at no additional cost.

ProPILOT Assist is another highlight of the Altima, providing single-lane highway driving assistance technologies. This piece of equipment is standard on the SV, SL, and Platinum. Also standard is the 2.5-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, which develops 188 horsepower and 180 pound-feet in the front-wheel-drive S grade. The VC-Turbo with 2.0 liters of displacement is exclusively front-wheel drive, rated at 248 hp and 273 lb-ft on premium gasoline.

The Xtronic continuously variable transmission is your only choice for swapping cogs, manufactured by JATCO for Nissan. If you know anything about CVTs, you might be aware that JATCO also happens to make some of the least reliable transmissions in the automotive industry.

Turning our attention back to pricing, the most affordable Altima with all-wheel drive and the 2.5-liter engine is the S AWD at $25,450 plus $895 for delivery. Higher up, the Platinum VC-Turbo with front-wheel drive retails at $35,180 excluding destination and handling.

“So what’s exactly new for the 2020 model year?” Nissan mentions the addition of a mirror memory function to the Platinum and Piano Black interior finishers in the SV, SL, and Platinum. Other than those improvements, the mid-size sedan is similar to the previous model year.

Manufactured in Canton and Smyrna, the sixth generation of the Altima is also made in China through a joint venture with Dongfeng. Over in Canada, Nissan didn’t even bother with the VC-Turbo or front-wheel drive.
