The 2014 Jeep Cherokee, which is scheduled to go on sale next month, will become the first US vehicle to offer a nine-speed automatic transmission, with the Range Rover Evoque to follow soon. Meanwhile in Europe, Mercedes-Benz has already introduced their 9G-Tronic on the E350 BlueTec.
ZF’s current eight-speed automatic, that can provide 11 percent fuel savings, is used by automakers such as Chrysler, Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover.
In other related news, ZF is investing $600 million in its Gray Court, South Carolina facility, where it aims to build 800,000 nine-speed transmissions each year.
