Back in 1992, British Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell had an extraordinary season. Behind the wheel of Williams-Renault cars, the Brit climbed to the top of the list and won that year’s championship. Now, the car he used in some of races of the season is up for sale.
The car in question is a Williams-Renault FW14B wearing chassis number FW14-08 and was driven by Mansell at the start of the season.
The car was designed by Formula 1 engineer Adrian Newey and was at the time one of the most advanced cars on the grid. It is also considered one of the best in the history of the sport.
At its core lies a Renault RS3 3.5-liter V10 engine that was controlled by means of a 6-speed semi-automatic transmission and developed up to 760 bhp. Technologies like ride-leveling active suspension were also featured.
In all, the car took part in 13 races that year, being driven by Mansell six times (the rest were driven by Mansell’s team-mate Riccardo Patrese). Of those, five were wins for the Brit.
The car is currently on the grounds of the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it will go under the hammer on July 5 at the hands of auction house Bonhams.
"The FW14B was the high-water mark in Grand Prix design for '92 and remains today one of the most sophisticated cars to compete in F1, and we at Bonhams are honored to have been entrusted with such a motor-racing legend," said in a statement Bonham’s director of motorsport Mark Osborne.
As per the organization, the car is “meticulously well-preserved,” at first by Williams Grand Prix Engineering and later on by a private collector. What's more important is the fact that the car is still in running order.
Bonhams did not say how much it expects to fetch for this Formula 1 car.
