As part of their collaboration with Swiss luxury watch maker IWC Schaffhausen, racers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton challenge each other into an “engineering race” in a new advertorial video. Meant to be a joke, the video shows Hamilton proving the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team is able to build a car in less than 30 seconds, while manufacturing a watch takes days, if not weeks. The two racers end up growing beards and the timepiece is still not ready.
First of all, we’ll need to warn you, this new advertorial is not really the best one Mercedes did lately. Built up as a funny story that is supposed to show that the exclusive timepieces are unique because its creators don’t rush in making them, the video is rather dry if not droll.
Hamilton is visiting the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team Head Quarters in Brackley, UK where he’s checking out the auto engineers building a race car. He starts a online video conversation with his F1 teammate, Nico Rosberg, who is also visiting a factory, only it’s in Switzerland at the IWC Schaffhausen headquarters.
The two bet each other over the engineers finishing their product in 30 seconds. While the Mercedes team builds the car in less than 30 seconds, the Swiss take a lot more to actually finish their luxury watch. It takes that much time, that the racers are pictured several days later still waiting. The point is that some things are better done slow than fast.
