Even though General Motors is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's number one "customer", other carmakers have their fair share of recalls waiting to happen. This time, the agency opened an investigation into Nissan over a brake pedal glitch.
Specifically, the NHTSA received 8 complaints alleging incidents involving excessive brake pedal travel. This is the second time this month the agency opened a preliminary investigation into Nissan after the 2007 Nissan Quest received 12 complaints incriminating faulty fuel gauges.
According to the ODI resume, an estimated 200,000 Nissan Sentra, Versa and Versa Note vehicles from the 2013 and 2014 model years can be affected by the braking fault. Currently, the NHTSA assesses "the scope, frequency and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect."
The Office of Defects Investigation also identified an Early Warning Reporting (EWR) filed report data related to the excessive brake pedal travel in the subject vehicles. If the NHTSA finds the fault to be a real safety hazard for the owners of the aforementioned 200k cars, a recall operation will be initiated.
In a certain complaint, the owner of a four-day-old 2013 model year Nissan Sentra with just 142 miles on the clock attempted to stop at a red light, but the sedan kept creeping forward despite properly engaging the brake pedal.
