The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s investigation into some 336,000 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickup trucks from the 2008 model year has been closed without a recall, The Detroit News reports.
The probe was opened last year, after the NHTSA received five complaints of steering gear failure. In a report released earlier this week, the agency said it “found no evidence of fatigue or material property defect in any of the fractures”, meaning that the “steering gear failure was most likely a result of crash forces, rather than the cause of the crash.”
The F-Series Super Duty was redesigned for the 2005 model year, when Ford increased the diameter of the sector shaft from 1.375 inches to 1.625 inches to increase the resistance of the steering gear assembly to torsional overload by about 48 percent.
