VW has recently launched an all-new MQB platform and one of the first future vehicles that will be underpinned by it is the Passat, which is expected to receive a new generation in mid-2014.
The vehicle will be a tad larger than the current generation and while the sedan and the estate will keep their identity, the CC model will be moved upmarket, being slotted between the Passat and the Phaeton, with the carmaker expected to also introduce coupe and convertible versions.
As for the tech goodies that will hide under the hood, VW is believed to be developing a new biTDI (bi-turbo TDI) diesel that should offer at least 200 hp. Another important novelty should be a plug-in hybrid version using a 1.4-liter turbocharged petrol unit and an electric motor, with its combined output sitting at 170 hp and its electric-only range at 50 km (31 miles). VW should also offer turbocharged petrol units (TSIs) with displacements of 1.4, 1.8 and 2.0 liters, with outputs ranging between 130 and 250 hp.
