We thought the Toyota Avensis is already dead, considering the slow sales it experiences in the midsize sedan segment. The Nissan Primera left the grounds in 2008 and Honda plans to axe the European Accord in 2016 as the only buyers left in this class are looking towards upper class marques, or are switching to compact and even crossovers. Still, Toyota looks to be willing to have another go at it.
The Avensis is now in it’s third generation and has already received a mid-life refresh in 2011, but Toyota Europe hasn’t included the mid-size sedan on the soon-to-receive-a-hybrid-powertrain list, which doesn’t fit in the automaker’s current ideology. Meaning it’s days are numbered too if you ask us.

Still, our spy photographers caught this fully camouflaged Avensis iteration undergoing road tests somewhere in Germany. The body shape is almost the same which means two things - either it’s just a mule for the next generation model or it’s going to be another facelift, possibly the last one.

There are some differences worth mentioning though, like the reshaped headlights with LED daytime running lights, slimmer LED taillights that appear to stick out from the trunk lid, reshaped side skirts, a different cut-out for the license plate and all-new bumpers.

Speaking of bumpers, some camouflage creases at the front seem to reveal a a huge trapezoidal design waiting to emerge from underneath; something inspired by the 2015 US Camry or the Toyota Vios.

It’s a bit early to talk about powertrains but you can be sure it won’t come with an electrically-assisted one. There’s a high chance that the list will contain two revised carryover diesel (2.2-liter D-4D, 2-liter D-4D) and gasoline (1.8-liter 2ZR-FAE and 2-liter 3ZR-FAE) units.

We expect the new Avensis to be unveiled next year, but do keep your browser pointed towards us for more info as soon as it’s available.
