Nissan's British officials have let slip the fact that a new Qashqai will make enter production with the Sunderland plant in November this year. Of course, China usually runs on a much delayed schedule, but the next generation SUV has been spotted for the first time in the People's Republic rather than on European soil.
The Qashqai is by far the best-selling model Nissan has in Europe. It's car-like interior and raised ground clearance have won it many customers over the years and the replacement can only be better.
These early spy photos from China don't tell us very much about what's coming. However, we expect the design to be similar to the Hi-Cross concept car shown last year. Nissan officials have hinted at an upmarket move, both inside and out.
Perhaps the biggest problem with the current Qashqai is not found in the design, but in the engine compartment. The base model comes with an underpowered by very thirsty 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol engine. This will be replaced by a 1.2-liter supercharged three-cylinder borrowed from the Micra DIG-S. Both the 1.5- and 1.6-liter dCi diesel will likely be kept, but they will be much cleaner and more frugal, thanks in part to standard start/stop across the range.
