Next Mercedes E63 AMG Will Have 600 HP from 4-Liter Twin-Turbo V8

It seems like only yesterday that most AMG models had a 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V8. Then came the excellent 6.2-liter, followed by the twin-turbo 5.5L. The next big thing in Affalterbach is the 4.0.

No, it's not the name of an antivirus system or software update, just the engine used by the C63 AMG. A few months before it was revealed, AMG boffins told us the 5.5-liter would never be used by another new car. They still gave us the S63 Coupe, but from now on it's all going to be downsizing.

A recent report from Autocar magazine suggests the next recipient of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo will be the W213 E-Class. In its most hardcore version, it will deliver up to 600 horsepower, making it 15 PS stronger than the current E63 S.

All that power will be delivered exclusively through an all-wheel drive system with a rear-biased setup. AMG boss Tobias Moers said that after 4Matic was added, very few people bought the outgoing E63 with RWD.

Our source speculates that the current 7-speed gearbox will make room for a 9-speed, but we think that's overkill for a speed-oriented car. These changes should also affect the next generation of the CLS 63 AMG, which will be based on the same platform.

As for styling, Mercedes has already shown a camouflaged W213 E-Class prototype. It seems to look very much like the C- and S-Class. The AMG model will have the same front blade as the A45 AMG facelift, and we think the following rendering, created by RM Design, is quite accurate.

The next RS6 is still a few years away, but we can tell you that Audi is considering using an electric turbocharger to be able to squeeze more power from an existing V8 engine. As for BMW and their M5, one prototype has been patrolling the streets of Germany for the past few months. The word is that it will combine its twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor. Exciting stuff!

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
