If we’d be a car, we really wouldn’t want to be the next generation of the Mazda MX-5 Miata. This is because the little sports car not only has big shoes to fill, it also has to step up its game, as people want more muscle and less weight.
Well, it seems like Mazda wants to be one step ahead of all this and is preparing something special for the next generation of the car. The MX-5 Miata’s next iteration, which will be built together with Alfa Romeo, is rumored to offer customization options like those featured by the Mini or the Fiat 500. The aim here is to help customers identify with their cars better.

The next incarnation of the MX-5 Miata won’t be here until 2015, but the vehicle will tip the scales at about 2,200 lbs (kg), which will make it 220 lbs (kg) lighter than the current model. Under the hood, we’ll get a downsized, 1.3-liter turbocharged engine with 200 hp, which means that the muscle will be up by 33 hp.

This would bring the MX-5 Miata the obvious benefits of such a classic upgrade recipe, with the both efficiency and dynamics being boosted.
