Mazda and Alfa Romeo are still in the development phase of their common sports car project that will see the future Miata / MX-5 share parts with an upcoming Alfa Romeo roadster and yet the powertrain side of the deal remains a mystery.
From deep withing Captain Obvious’ log, we know have a report that indicates Alfa’s version of the sports car will wear Fiat’s 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit. We are talking about the engine on the Fiat 500 Abarth and Dodge Dart.

The unit delivers 160 HP on both the aforementioned models, but it could get a power bump for the sportscar, perhaps to 180 HP, as seen on the Abarth 695 Edizione Maserati, for instance.

The engine will be longitudinally-mounted, sending its power to the rear wheels via an yet unmentioned transmission. We hope that rear diff is pretty good...
