Next Mazda CX-9 to Drop Ford-Sourced V6, Might Go Turbo

As you all know, Mazda is doing a sportscar with Alfa Romeo, the new MX-5. It’s going to be awesome, but you can forget all about it because your wife will never let you buy one. What she will let you buy is a family SUV, which if you wait a couple more years could be a really good Mazda CX-9.
We’ve loved pretty much every new car Mazda gave us to drive in the past two years and are really hopeful the next CX-9 will be the same. After they’ve binned the CX-7, this is one of only two SUVs they make and it’s particularly important for the US market. Now, we’ve caught wind of the changes they plan on making to the next generation, coming all the way from Australia.

CarAdvice spoke to Mazda’s head of global sales and marketing recently, learning that a new CX-9 is on the way and could be launched in 2016. The model is expected to drop the V6 engine, which is a carryover from the Ford era. Big SUVs need big power, no matter what weight reduction Japan’s engineers can make, so the four-cylinder in the new CX-9 might be a turbo, maybe an evolution of the old 2.3-liter, maybe a brand new engine based on what they put in the Mazda6.

While the vehicle might be powered by a turbo, it most likely will not be a turbodiesel. “With the CX-9 the main market is the USA. In general, these customers don’t have a strong preference towards diesel engines. So probably the main engine should be a petrol engine in my opinion,” said Masahiro Moro, the company official in question.

The official believes that while the company is moving away from the V6 right now, it will have to bring it back some time in the future. He admitted that Mazda is moving into premium segments and will require an engine to suit that.
