All automakers are struggling to make their cars greener than ever, and while there was some initial excitement among the paint shops around the world, it quickly became apparent that it was all for nothing.
This economical and eco-friendly side of vehicles has become so important that it even comes with its own awards. One such contest is being held each year in the UK, being organized by Next Greencar, a website dedicated to helping consumers choose cars based on their “green rating.”
This year, the shortlist consisted of four models for each of the ten categories for a total of 40 entrants. Among the familiar and expected faces like the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius or the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, there are a few surprising models that made it to the shortlist.
What’s also a bit disturbing is the fact that half of the winners use diesel engines, which only comes to show Europe’s reluctance to take into consideration the side effects of the excessive proliferation of this type of engines. But since the European legislation is built around CO2 emissions, an European website such as Next Greencar has to oblige.
So, without much further ado, here are the 2015 winners. Note that among the winners there is just one gasoline engine (the Fiat 500), while electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids have two representatives each (Nissan and Tesla for the EVs and Volkswagen and Mitsubishi for the PHEVs) and diesels are leading with no less than five.
