Despite it’s age, the Toyota Tacoma small pickup truck still manages to dominate sales in the segment. We can’t say it really has some competition there, but as it’s starting to build up, the old Taco soon needs to be replaced in order to keep up. And we could see a new model as soon as January next year.
According to an Automotive News report, Toyota plans to unveil the next generation Tacoma at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show in January, hoping to bring it into dealerships the same year.

The new pickup is expected to be redesigned both inside and out, also getting mechanically improved with a new engine, although it’s hard to say what that updated unit will be.

Currently, the Tacoma is offered in two body styles (Double or Access Cab) and gets powered either by a 159 hp 2.7-liter inline-four or a 236 hp 4-liter V6, both using VVT-i technology to achieve improved fuel efficiency.

There’s also a new TRD Pro version available, which adds a higher Bilstein suspension, TRD cat-back exhaust, bash plates, special mats and shift knob, a special orange paint as well as beadlock-style alloy wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich all-terrain tires.

The main competitor in the segment for the Tacoma is the Nissan Frontier, which is also more expensive, along with the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon which are more competitively priced.

Not much of a market, since the Tacoma sold over 140,000 in the first 11 months, accounting for 66% of total mid-size pickup sales, but that newly-arrived Chevy comes in close, so Toyota would better hurry with a new model.
