The first week of 2014 brought along some interesting updates regarding the future of BMW models in the year that just began. One close source to BMW that usually follows forums around the world, posted what seems to be a complete list of the new models the Germans will release this year.

Whilst most of them have already been discussed, there is one little interesting thing I noticed about the upcoming 7 Series. For a while now, we knew the codename for the new flagship will be G11. However, this new info shows another 7er codenamed G12.

Now, the G12 could be one of two things: it could be a hybrid or a new model. The latter seems implausible (unless it might be an 8 Series! Keep your fingers crossed) but the first one might very well come true. That’s because BMW and all its European rivals are pressured by the EU to lower their fleet CO2 emission levels to unfathomable numbers. Going hybrid with the new 7 Series is higly recommendable, in their push to comply with EU regulations. My bet is that it will be using the same eDrive technology we’ve seen on the X5 eDrive Concept that might very well be launched this year.

Apparently, there will be two plug-in models in the line-up, the 740e and 740Le, the latter being just a long wheelbase version of the first. With such lettering on the boot, we can presume that they will be using 3-liter turbocharged petrol engines with electric motors alongside but at the moment, this is just speculation as we're at least 2 years away from the official launch of the new 7 Series. We'll keep you up to speed as soon as we get more info.
