Halo cars - we all know them, pin them to our bedroom walls and sometimes save up in order to buy them when we’re older. Anybody with a head for business will tell you that making these extreme machines isn’t exactly a profitable business.
The Bugatti Veyron is reportedly made at a loss in order to establish the brand. Mitsubishi is loosing money on the Evo X, of which they only sell about three thousand a year. And even though Akio Toyota wanted the LFA supercar to be built, there were voices, strong voices, within Toyota who disagreed.
We never thought thought the Nissan GT-R would ever be in the same boat. After all, the prices have been creeping upwards for a while now, and demand for a car that can rival an Aventador in sprint time should be through the roof. But, of course there’s a gap between the Pixo or whatever other boring car you might want to mention and the mighty GT-R.
The R35 is already an icon that’s been with us for a good few years now. It was originally expected to be replaced by a new generation codenamed R36 for the 2014 mode year, which is just around the corner. That’s a bit optimistic considering work hasn’t even begun yet.
According to Inside Line, one of the reasons for this is that the R35's chief engineer Kazutoshi Mizuno retired from his work at Nissan. Of course, working on a car that mashes your brains isn’t something just anybody can do.
What’s more, Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn has yet to give the R36 project the financial backing it needs to start. Just like Ford is too busy making electric car to develop a replacement for the Focus RS, so too is Nissan focusing on its electric vehicles. So, has the mighty GT-R been killed off by the plucky and annoying EVs.
Well, we don’t think so. Remember, there was a huge gap between the R34 and R35, and so we can expect the current supercar beater to have to soldier on for a while longer.
