Next-Gen Mitsubishi L200 Pickup Truck Could Spawn a Fiat Version

Back in May when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles was revealing the five-year plan for many of its brands, one of the many interesting vehicles suggested was a new mid-size pickup truck for the Fiat. We now have a better idea of what this vehicle will be as Fiat and Mitsubishi have announced an agreement that would see the Italian automaker get a rebadged version of the next-gen Mitsubishi L200/Triton.
Rumors of a Fiat-badged Mitsubishi (Fiatsubishi, if you will) pickup first popped up earlier in the year, but the two automakers confirmed the possibility of such a vehicle with today’s announcement of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement has plenty of wording that could allow the truck to never happen including the agreement being “non-binding” and later going on to say that such a pickup truck is only a “possibility,” but it still sounds very likely that Fiat to get its own version of the future L200, which will likely be heavily influenced by the 2013 Mitsubishi GR-HEV Concept (shown above).

There was no timeframe for such a vehicle to happen, but the current Mitsubishi L200/Triton has been around since 2004, and spy shots of the next-gen model made the rounds late last year. Before you get your hopes up of an FCA rival to the Chevrolet Colorado in the U.S., though, Automotive News says that this Fiat truck would be intended only for the European and Latin American markets. The report also says that this truck would be sold by Fiat Professional, which current also sells the front-drive, unibody Strada pickup.

This deal further expands on the relationship between Chrysler and Mitsubishi including a five-year agreement announced back in July where one of Chrysler’s brands in Mexico would sell a rebadged version of the Mitsubishi Attrage.
