Japanese manufacturer Honda is reconsidering its future plans and intends to make the next-generation Civic smaller and lighter compared to the current model. Curiously, the company initially aimed to make the upcoming Civic a bit larger and more spacious but CEO Takanobu Ito decided it is the time to go for smaller models.
The upcoming Civic will be, according to leftlanenews.com, lighter and smaller than the current version. Nevertheless, in spite of the different dimensions, it will provide similar interior space. The weight reduction will also contribute to fuel efficiency which will be obviously improved with the help of several engine upgrades.
“We are taking more time to rethink the new Civic and all our models,” Ito told Automotive News. “We had to revisit our development work and planning to comply with the change in the environment.”
As for the official release of the new Civic, the car was initially projected to be launched in 2010 but the new plan will surely delay the product for a while. Further information is yet to be disclosed.
“The team is struggling. We are injecting more manpower to meet our target,” Ito explained.
The 2010 Civic comes in the same four engine and four transmission choices ranging from the 1.8l i-VTEC engine paired with 5 speed manual/automatic transmission (140 hp) to the 2.0l i-VTEC engine paired with the 6 speed automatic transmission (197 hp). The remaining two engines are the 1.3l i-VTEC hybrid engine and the 1.8l i-VTEC engine powered by natural gas.
