It feels like just yesterday Dave Pericak shared the details of the then-new S550 Ford Mustang with us during an interview at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. Many things have changed meanwhile, from the ex Mustang Chief Engineer becoming even more important for the company to NAIAS being moved to June. However, it's still difficult to believe that it's almost time to meet the next-gen, S650 Ford Mustang.
And yet, as we discussed last month, a job listing by the Ford Motor Company showed that the seventh iteration of the pony is set to land in 2022, coming to the market as a 2023 model year.

Factor in the effervescent nature of the contemporary rendering realm and it shouldn't come as a surprise to see digital artists venturing a guess on how the newcomer will look.

So far, unofficial sources have mentioned an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary design for the S650 Mustang. Nevertheless, the rendering we have here scraps all that, introducing an uber-aggressive retro-futuristic styling that seems like a bit of a departure from the lines of the current car.

Of course, with the model pictured here being the Shelby GT500, the extra visual badassery can be expected.

Independent artist Basile G, who is responsible for this eye candy, decided to mix the silhouette of the late 1960s Mustangs, when the platform made room for a big block and specials like the Mach 1 were born, with a host of uber-modern details.

So you'll instantly recognize the Mustang aura of the side view, with or without the super-sized wheels, with the same being true for the posterior - this is where the retro-minimalistic light clusters and the exposed lower rear fascia make for a memorable view.

The front end is a bit more on the abstract side, at least to these eyes, but this still blends in with the rest of the vehicle.

Of course, not all gear heads will agree, which is the same thing we can say about the hybrid option of the S650, which is expected to mix the good old V8 with electric motors and bring an AWD Mustang to the market almost six decades after Ford engineers tested such a layout, albeit in internal combustion-only form.

We could also see an all-electric model joining the opinion-splitting badge of the Mustang Mach-E crossover, but it's too early to tell if last year's Ford Mustang Lithium concept, or at least its plug-only principle, is set to become a production reality.
