The original Bugatti Veyron was a mind blowing supercar when it debuted in 2005 with 987 hp, and things got even more unreal when the 1,200-hp Veyron showed up in 2010. Looking to show both of these cars up, though, it’s quite possible that Bugatti is developing a 1,500-hp drivetrain for use in the next-generation Veyron, or whatever its successor is will be called.
Having helped inspire a new breed ultra-high-performance car, the next-gen Veyron is said to use a hybrid powertrain similar to newer and more advanced hypercars like the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder. Now, before you go and think that the Veyron will give up its mighty 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W-16, check this out. Recent reports from Autoguide indicate that this engine will be mated to some sort of electrified hybrid system to help boost power output somewhere into the 1,500-hp ball park. Such rumors popped up earlier in the year and were quashed by Bugatti President Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, but hopefully the resurgence of the rumor bodes well for a 1,500 production car.

While there isn’t any concrete information to back up this new hybrid system or the ridiculously high power output, it would definitely match up with the Veyron prototype spotted running at the Nürburgring a few months ago with a strange metal brace over the engine compartment. That car was obviously testing some sort of powertrain components, so it wouldn’t seem to hard to imagine the current 1,200-hp engine being paired with a hybrid drive unit to produce even more power. This much power would almost certainly help the next-gen Veyron recapture the title of world’s fastest production car, which is currently held by the Hennessey Venom GT and its 270 mph top speed.

Fortunately, it doesn’t sound like we will have to wait much longer to see what the future has in store for the Veyron as its successor is expected to debut sometime next year. Like today's Veyron, the production of the next-gen model would be severely limited as over 10 years only 450 examples of the car have been built. Speaking of the current Veyron, if you want one, you should probably act fast as the report also indicates that there are only 20 remaining units left to be sold.
