BMW is already working on the future 6 Series even though the car is currently at least 4 years away. At the moment, according to BMW insider Scott27, the designers are working on its exterior, focusing on a variety of aspects that have to be taken into consideration.
Just like the 7 Series, the new 6er will shed some serious weight, at the moment rumored to be around 250 kilograms (551 lbs). All that will be due to extensive usage of aluminum, magnesium, high-tensile steel and carbon fibre, of course. But how extensive will this weight dropping program be?

To get a good idea, Scott tells us that the roof structure, the A, B and C pillars and the roof altogether will be made of carbon fibre. Such a move might seem silly at first, due to the characteristics of the material but considering the advancements in the field filed in the last few years and the CFRP production BMW accounts for, the idea doesn’t sound crazy at all.

Such a solution would not only drop the weight of the car overall but it would also do so in key areas, in the spirit of the ‘intelligent weight reduction’ BMW brags about every time they get the chance. Reducing the weight in those areas would lead to a lower center of gravity and thus better handling.

Of course, the M model will take things even further with an even more powerful engine too but in the meantime, the Coupe and Convertible 6 Series will lead the charge.

As for the exterior design, much of it will be inspired by the Vision Future Luxury concept. The front headlights will be thinner and wider while even the kidney grilles might be re-imagined. While it’s too early to talk about a set-in-stone design, it’s not too early to presume that laser lights will be available as well as organic LEDs. Speaking of which, it seems like the Sedans of the future will have the OLED technology infused in their taillights in the shape of an L while the Coupes will have an upside down L.
