In the wake of automakers striving to keep emissions under control, BMW might have to go beyond EfficientDynamics to deliver never-before seen CO2 emissions for its fleet.
We've already seen the new 5 Series out testing, even though in the shape of a very early Touring prototype. The new car will definitely want to keep its crown in the luxury full-size sedan segment and will come out with massive improvements.

Based on the chassis of the G11 7 Series due around 2016, the new 5er will be coming out with a new 3-cylinder diesel engine from the B38 engine family, according to autobild. Furthermore, the new unit will have 150 HP and take only 3.9 liters of diesel to cover 100 km (over 60 mpg), becoming the most fuel efficient car in the Series' history.

If the rumors will come true, this new car will be sharing the engine with its smaller sibling, the 3 Series that will be borrowing the unit to save costs. Judging by recent developments we're even willing to bet that the new model will also have an improved version of the ActiveHybrid5 model, using i3 technology.

Furthermore, the Autobild people also claim that there will be 5 new 3-liter engines available on the new model. The 530i will be reinstated with a 3-liter engine that develops 333 HP whilst the 535i will be using the same engine tuned to deliver 375 HP.

As for the diesel counterparts, 3-liter units will be making more power, the 530d being rated at 286 HP whilst the 535d model delivering 333 HP, 20 more than in the F10 model. The M550d model will be kept and will have 20 HP more, reaching 401 HP in total.
