Next Ford Mustang GT500 Will Still Be Supercharged, to Provide 570 HP

The Mustang is one hot ride, regardless of its version. However, some incarnations of the pony are hotter than others and we think that the car that sends the most chills down Ford fans’ back is the GT500. The model has been the ‘it’ word when it came to supercharged ponies, but for some time now, it was rumored the next generation would switch to turbocharging, more specifically twin-turbocharging.

The current generation is a pure machine, pushing out a whopping 550 hp from its massive 5.4-liter V8, thanks in part to a long list of performance mods. According to a report from Motor Authority, the next generation will keep its supercharger for the foreseeable future.

The 2014 model will get at least 20 ponies extra, bringing the grand total to about 570 horsepower. It won’t be a major redesign, since a new Mustang will arrive in 2014, but it’s still going to take the fight to the Chevy Camaro ZL1. The engineering complexity and sheer cost of packaging twin turbos into the engine bay alongside the big V8 and still offer a decent price. However, fans of the brand probably won’t be complaining.

On deck for 2012 is a new Boss version of the Mustang, though details on that model are still being withheld. In the meantime, the Mustang is expected to get an even more focused Track Pack to complement the big V-8.

All in all, the changes brought about in 2013 aren’t revolutionary, so will have to wait for the lighter, more focused next-gen Mustang for a radical track animal. Given previous rumors suggested the GT500 would have 620 hp, we can’t hide our disappointment with just 20 extra horsepower.
