BMW has been involved in carbon fiber development, with the carmaker set to use the material for its i green sub-brand. However, the automotive producer will also use carbon fiber for its mainstream vehicles and it seems that the 7-Series is the first model that will benefit from this.
Head of BMW R&D Klaus Draeger told autocar that the next generation of the flagship sedan, which should arrive in 2015, will be the first mainstream BMW to feature the lightweight material.
He explained that the vehicle’s structure will probably combine carbon fiber with aluminum and steel, with the first probably set to be used for parts such as the hood, doors and roof, which means that the vehicle will also come with a lower center of gravity. BMW has used carbon fiber before, for the roofs of certain M models, but we are now talking about volume models, as well as wider spread of the material.
