It seems like our predictions about BMW’s future were correct, if we’re to believe the latest scoop about the upcoming 5 Series Car Magazine published yesterday. According to them, a lot of new things are expected to be launched on the upcoming model.

It will be codenamed G30 and will be the most advanced car in its segment when it will be released, rumored to be somewhere in 2016. We already knew that it will be losing some weight but we didn’t know exactly how much: 80 kilos on the standard 5 Series and 180 kilos on the M5, according to CAR.

Furthermore, the M5 will be getting more power out of the same 4.4-liter V8 engine it’s using now, rated somewhere at around 600 HP (I’m guessing around 800 Nm of torque too). For the basic models, there will be a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter engine used on the 518d model, thanks to the drop in weight.

Other models will get a bump in power, using the famed B-family engines I’ve been talking about, with their similar 500cc cylinders. The 525d and 520d will have the same 2-liter turbocharged engine with up to 231 HP whilst 3-liter units will power the 530i (333 HP) and 540i (375 HP). The M Performance M550d will also get one more turbocharger (reaching a total of 4!) and a power bump to 400 HP.

Of course, hybrids will also be available, using the eDrive technology from the i3. However, induction charging will be available (meaning wireless) and electric range is expected to be higher. Technology-wise, the 5 Series will also employ the over-the-air updates we’ve mentioned and automatic parking alongside overtaking without driver input (making old-school BMW fans scream in despair).

Whether all this will come true, we’ll have to wait and see. I’m pretty sure it will but it would’ve helped if the CAR article had a viable source. Keep your fingers crossed!
