Next Audi TT Pretty Much Confirmed as 4-Door Coupe Only

In 2014, Audi presented the TT Sportback, which it wanted to put into production, along with a coupe version of the Q3. However, it was bad timing, since the Dieselgate scandal put a stop to most new model development spending.

While TDI is still causing problems and added costs, Audi has recovered. The TT Sportback will be built, but not alongside the regular 2-door model. Instead, it will replace it completely in a move which we don't find that surprising.

Sales of the "hairdressers' car" have been declining all over the world. It has nothing to do with the TT specifically, but with demand for sports cars in general. Sooner or later, TT was always going to go the way of the dodo bird... and the VW Scirocco.

How are we so sure that next TT will be a four-door? Well, because two publications claimed the same thing together. We have a report from Auto Express and a cool little video from the Germans at Auto Bild. This is pretty rare and means Audi has made up its mind on the subject.


"If you set falling demand against rising costs, it’s obvious Audi cannot sustain its present course in the medium term," said an unnamed Audi Board Member in an interview with the British source.

Those mounting costs have to do with constantly evolving emissions regulations. And rumor has it the new TT will counter with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and a plug-in hybrid version.

The TT Sportback will be about the size of the 2014 design study, but its design will be influenced by the other Audi models. Riding on the next-gen MQB platform, this coupe should arrive no later than 2021.
